The Learning Academies @ SHSU
The Learning Academies @ SHSU offer both live and online classes that feature competency-based curriculum. We have multiple professional development tracks designed to maximize your potential and encourage effective leadership, while helping managers strengthen your team.
Degree Program Courses
You can take college courses directly related to your current or prospective job duties within your department to fulfill your annual professional development requirement. You can earn professional development credit on a 1-to-1 hourly basis. For example, if you are in class (or take equivalent online courses) twice a week for a total of 3 hours, you would earn 3 credits for the week toward your requirement. Full-time (1.0 FTE) benefits-eligible staff employees who have one year of full-time continuous employment may be eligible for the Employee Tuition Assistance program. SHSU will waive institutional tuition and fees for courses taken at SHSU. You will only be responsible for the payment of statutory tuition.
The High Potential Employee Leadership Academy is a 9-month experience that involves a series of monthly development sessions that address key leadership topics and specific focus groups. The members of the program will be selected utilizing a decentralized nomination process for a total of 21 members.
You may attend external training when internal training is not available to satisfy the need. Requests for external training should be directed to your supervisor for approval and budget availability.
The university believes that professional development should be required throughout the career of education support professionals.

Create a Training
Departments may develop online courses or live training events to communicate their services, business process, or demonstrate their product. We will create all online courses and live events in Talent Management. Instructors will be responsible for maintaining live event sessions.
All live events must have at least one instructor that manages the roster and creation of sessions. The instructor does not have to be the individual hosting the training. Prior to the event creation, instructors must complete Talent Management Training.
Departments interested in having courses added to Talent Management for registration should contact the Senior Human Resource Manager for Professional Development at 936-294-2328 to schedule a consultation. In your consultation, you will receive recommendations for formatting, presenting, and marketing your event.
Contact our Senior Human Resource Manager for Professional Development, TJ Bittick, to learn about our request process.
