Bearkat Spotlight

In May of 2019, students throughout Texas participated in the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness Test, most commonly known as STAAR. Here at the SHSU Charter School, our third grade students were taking these assessments for the first time. All third grade students had to take a reading and math assessment. One of our exceptional third graders, Swarup Giri, earned a perfect score on the Math STAAR! To earn this distinction, Swarup had to get all 32 graded questions correct on the test.

Swarup reports he applied strategies to achieve higher accuracy including recalling information, being careful with writing, and reviewing his work before turning in the test. He works on math and reading from home to keep his memory fresh. His teachers helped him set goals throughout the year. When asked how it felt to earn such a high score, he replied, “It feels very nice when I got that score. My parents were very happy. My Grandmother and Grandfather are very proud of me.”

Other interesting facts about Swarup: This year he skipped the fourth grade and is now in fifth grade. He is also in the Gifted and Talented program at school. One of his hobbies is collecting foreign currencies. “Over the summer I went to visit my family in Nepal. It was very precious time over there. I had handwriting and craft class during my stay in Nepal. Also, I did some research on the topic of Robotics.”

His third grade math teacher last year was Mrs. Trahan, and she had this to say about working with him:

Swarup is a self-motivated and goal driven learner. He asks questions when he does not understand a concept. He also does researches on his own or asks people who know better than him to further understand. He enjoys problem solving and is interested in higher-level math, science, and social studies ideas. CONGRATULATIONS!! You deserve to be celebrated. I am proud of your perseverance and hard work. You truly are an incredible student.

The Sam Houston State University Charter School staff are proud of Swarup’s achievements and we look forward to seeing what else he accomplishes throughout his very bright future.
