The Counseling Center

Welcome to the Sam Houston State University Counseling Center!

The SHSU Counseling Center provides individual, couples, and group therapy to students who are currently enrolled. Our mission is to provide service within the university environment that contributes to the academic success, personal growth, and positive social contribution of Sam Houston State University students. We embrace a student-oriented philosophy that is respectful of diversity and is committed to the development of the student as a whole person.

The SHSU Counseling Center expresses our grief, sorrow, and compassion to all those who have been impacted by the hate-based tragedies that have been occurring across our country. The Counseling Center team condemns oppression in all its forms.

We acknowledge that for members of impacted communities witnessing these events as they unfold may be continuously re-traumatizing. In the aftermath of experiencing or witnessing trauma, it is normal to experience a wide range of feelings and emotions, such as shock, fear, sadness, anger, helplessness or guilt.  We are committed to supporting all of our students who have been directly or indirectly impacted. We encourage you to contact our office if you (or someone you know) would like support with coping and healing.

Counseling services are available during normal business hours throughout the year except on university designated holidays. For more information, call us at (936) 294-1720 or stop by to make an appointment to speak with a counselor.
