In a comedy about competition, completion, and finding the “airness” inside yourself, the play “Airness” by Chelsea Marcantel follows Nina when she enters her first air guitar competition thinking winning will be easy. As she befriends a group of charismatic nerds all committed to becoming the next champion, she discovers that there's more to this art form than playing pretend; it's about finding yourself in your favorite songs, and performing with raw joy. Will Nina be able to let go and set herself free onstage, following her mission to shred or be shredded? “Airness” is an exuberant reminder that everything we need to rock is already inside us.

"Threshold" Exhibition
Works by Julie DeVries, Dornith Doherty, and Jessica Kreutter
Sep. 6 – Oct. 8, 2022
University Gallery, Dana G. Hoyt Fine Arts Building

“Threshold” brings together the work of three Texas-based artists in conversation about the relationship between humans and plant life. The exhibition explores the ways in which nature can provide solace, comfort, and beauty while presenting ethical challenges and the dilemma of mortality.

Julie DeVries finds solace and hope in the beauty of nature. Her paintings provide a meditation on the wonder of being outdoors. In the wake of the last few years, DeVries’ work provides the opportunity to take a deep breath and get lost in the marvel of a blade of grass.

Dornith Doherty collaborates with scientists, international seed banks, botanical centers and research institutes around the world who are working to ensure the survival of genetic diversity in both wild and agricultural species. Using magnified x-ray images, Doherty documents and collages seed and tissue samples to explore such issues as human intervention and stewardship of the environment. The resulting images are poetic while posing philosophical and ethical questions about human impact on the environment.

Jessica Kreutter’s porcelain sculptures illustrate nature as a fantastical, uncontained force which intertwines and becomes one with the body or other objects it encounters. The work is both beautiful and delicate yet uncomfortable. It is visually light with darker conceptual connotations. Kruetter’s work reminds us that all things return to nature.
