Master of Arts in Political Science

The Master of Arts in political science is designed for both recent college graduates and individuals seeking to advance their professional or academic careers. Our online program serves students preparing for doctoral studies or law school, high school teachers seeking to improve their professional credentials, individuals wanting to teach in community colleges, and individuals preparing for careers or advancement in nonprofit organizations (international and domestic) and the public sector. The program offers two degree plans: a thesis option (30 hours of coursework and a written thesis) and a non-thesis option (36 hours of coursework and written comprehensive exams).

Graduate Certificate

The graduate certificate in political science is designed for high school and community college instructors who wish to obtain 18 hours of graduate coursework relevant to key fields in the discipline of political science, such as the field of American Politics. Course offerings allow students to complete the certificate in one year if students take two courses per semester including summer.
This Graduate Certificate is eligible to receive Title IV funding – Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Graduate PLUS loans by request. To be considered for aid, students need to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

  • Application Dates & Admissions Requirements

    Students are admitted to the graduate program with the following application deadlines:
    Fall semester enrollment: August 1
    Spring semester enrollment: December 1
    Summer enrollment: May 15

  • Financial Aid

    Sam Houston State University can assist prospective and current graduate students secure financial aid for graduate school. To qualify for financial aid, graduate students must be enrolled as a half-time student, attend all courses, and make satisfactory academic progress towards the completion of their degree.   • Scholarships

    All newly admitted graduate students are considered for scholarships awarded by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Additionally, political science students are encouraged to apply for the General Graduate Scholarship which is supported by The Graduate School. During the academic year, political science students receive information about scholarship and grant opportunities. Political science faculty support students who seek internal and external scholarships and grants.

    The ASPIRE Program is a student success program for master's level graduate students of SHSU. The program offers comprehensive support for scholars’ personal growth, professional development, and academic success. ASPIRE supports and encourages its scholars to pursue and finish graduate school, improve educational experiences, and prepare them for careers.
