The Huntsville Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program has launched a new wellness initiative to bring health education to the community, one step at a time. The free monthly walk brings together residents, physicians and families to encourage healthier habits through movement and conversation.
Walk With a Doc Huntsville held its first event Saturday, June 7, at Eastham Thomason Park. Local residents gathered for a brief discussion on heart health and the risks of physical inactivity, followed by a group walk along the park’s wide sidewalks. Although the plan called for just two laps, many participants kept going and walked four, covering about two miles with the doctors.
“We wanted to take healthcare beyond the exam room and into the community,” said Dr. Kerolos Youssef, chief resident with the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. “There is something special about walking alongside someone – it makes health conversations feel natural, not clinical. It was great to see patients, families and physicians all moving together.”
Walk With a Doc is a national movement that encourages physical activity and health literacy through informal, accessible events. Participants of all ages and fitness levels are welcome. The pace is relaxed, the conversation is casual and there’s no cost or registration required.
Weather permitting, future walks will take place at 8 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month at Eastham Thomason Park.
