As Kenneth Bengtson prepares to graduate magna cum laude from Sam Houston State University, he reflects on a college experience defined by leadership, service and personal growth.

“SHSU has equipped me with valuable insights and guidance, providing a solid foundation for continued growth and success as I advance in my professional career,” Bengston said. “Time moves faster than you expect, and these years were filled with experiences that can shape a lifetime.”

Throughout his time in the College of Business Administration (COBA), Bengtson stood out as a student leader committed to uplifting others through his involvement in several student organizations. One of his most meaningful contributions was his role as president of the Bearkat Entrepreneurship Club (BEC). He also served as vice president for the Society for Human Resource Management and vice president of events for the COBA Ambassadors.

“My goal was to ensure that every member received the engagement, resources and support they deserved to grow personally and professionally,” he said. “I was motivated to revitalize BEC’s presence and create meaningful opportunities for its members.”

Bengtson’s academic highlights include the university’s highest student honor. In April, he was recognized as one of the most distinguished student leaders on campus by receiving a Sammy Award.

He also gained extensive professional experience, holding multiple part-time roles across campus. Most recently, he worked as an assistant for the Center for Building Business Professionals in COBA, where he developed career opportunity spreadsheets for students, scheduled peer mentoring sessions and organized outreach events to promote the department across the college.

“Embrace every opportunity with courage and confidence, no matter how intimidating it may seem,” he said. “Each one is a step toward growth and success.”

Last summer, Bengtson completed an operations internship with DHL Supply Chain in La Porte, Texas. He conducted time studies to improve productivity, helped update standard operating procedures and collaborated with other interns on a global presentation aimed at advancing DHL’s 2050 net-zero emissions goal. His performance led to a full-time job offer, and he will begin working as an operations supervisor in June.

While Bengtson faced his share of challenges, including learning how to manage differing personalities in student leadership roles, they helped him develop stronger communication skills, emotional intelligence and a collaborative leadership style.

“I learned to address issues proactively, set clear expectations and foster a team environment where everyone felt valued,” he said. “Over time, I became a more adaptable and effective leader.”

As Bengtson prepares for life after graduation, he is also celebrating a personal milestone — his upcoming wedding in March 2026.

Looking back, he describes his SHSU journey as a foundation for future success. He also finds meaning in passing the torch to his younger brother, Kade, who will continue the family’s Bearkat legacy.

“It feels surreal to see one chapter of my life come to a close while another begins,” he said. “My advice to my brother is to remain present in each moment and make the most of every opportunity.”

With his academic achievements, leadership roles and professional experience, Bengtson is launching into the next phase of life with confidence — and a few steps ahead.
