Why did you choose to join the military?

MD: I have always had the desire to serve my country, and truly think patriotism is a strong element to the United States. I was 17 years old when I enlisted and still feel the same way.

What was your reason for continuing your education and choosing SHSU?

MD: I loved that SHSU offered one of the top criminal justice programs in the nation and I lived in Houston, Texas, so it was an easy decision.

Are you involved in any other SHSU organizations or groups?

MD: During my undergraduate degree (2013-2019), I played women’s rugby, lacrosse and powerlifted. Now, during my master’s degree, I am just focusing on completing the program.

What do you want your civilian peers to know about your service?

MD: I love the person I have become through military service, and I would never change a single thing about it.

How has your service history impacted your academic life?

MD: The military has made me become more disciplined in almost every aspect of life to include striving to graduate with my bachelor’s and now my master’s degree.

How easy/difficult was your transition from the military into an academic setting?

MD: Since I have been in the Texas Army National Guard, there has not been much transition other than to enjoy the time I have during the college.

How has SHSU aided your transition?

MD: The administration staff and professors have been nothing but helpful and understanding when scheduling and attending courses in person and online.

Do you have a hard time relating to your peers?

MD: I struggled with this after returning from Basic Training and my first deployment, being more independent and self-disciplined than other students.

What are your future goals or dreams?

MD: I want to graduate with my masters, continue my civilian career in law enforcement as well as retiring from the USCG Reserves.
