birdsallarticleBeginning Wednesday, Feb. 27, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum will present “Views of the Museum Complex,” presented by curators Casey Roon and Derrick Birdsall.

Both avid photographers, Roon and Birdsall have collaborated on a collection of favorite images captured across the Sam Houston Memorial Museum Complex.  From the historical buildings to the ducks and chickens, “Views of the Museum Complex” lets patrons see the museum through the eyes of two people who are most familiar with the historical grounds.

“As I looked over ten years of images that I have captured around the museum and began to choose images for this show, a strong theme presented itself: I am interested in relationships,” said Roon, curator of exhibits.

"The flora and fauna of the Museum complex tends to capture the majority of my attention as I roam the grounds and delight in its seasonal changes. There is always something (or someone) new to discover, which changes the dynamic of the grounds once more. I find great delight in these subtle, individual changes that change the whole environment.” - Casey Roon

“The Museum grounds and historic structures make for a wonderful backdrop to catch the light streaming in from between the trees,” said Birdsall, curator of education. “At almost any time of the day, if you take the time to look, you will see pockets of light throughout the property where Sam and Margaret once called home.  As a photographer, I love the contrast between dark and light, shadows and texture and the museum grounds make for a wonderful hunting ground to try and capture that contrast.”

The exhibition will be available to the public from February 27 to May 5, 2019.
