Academic Transfer Pathway
Lone Star College
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has designed a curriculum that is flexible enough to accommodate degree plans that emphasize abstract mathematics, statistics, and mathematics teacher preparation. An undergraduate degree in mathematics prepares a student for a wide variety of career opportunities in business, industry, and education, which call for analytic and problem-solving abilities.
The Department offers both Bachelor Arts of Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics. In the BA program, there are 36 required hours of mathematics as opposed to 39 hours in the BS program. Additionally, students seeking a BA must take freshmen and sophomore courses of a foreign language. Students seeking the BS replace the foreign language requirement with coursework in the sciences. In particular, students in this degree program are required to take calculus-based physics as partial fulfillment of their degree requirements. Proper selection of science courses designated for "majors" may enhance your employability.
Students who are interested in becoming a high school mathematics teacher can choose one or two teaching fields as an option. Contact the department at math_stat@shsu.edu or (936) 294-1564 for further details.

Additional information:
- More information about major core course requirements for each degree program can be found at http://catalog.shsu.edu/undergraduate/colleges-academic-departments/science-and-engineering-technology/mathematics-statistics/.
- Transfer students planning to register for upper division courses immediately on arrival at SHSU must have completed MATH 1430 with a “C” or better prior to registration.
- A maximum of 66 transfer credit hours (“C” or better excluding kinesiology) may be applied to a degree at SHSU. Students should carefully select courses to complete the associate degree while minimizing the number of hours that might exceed the 66-hour cap for transfer credit
- In addition to the major core above transfer students should complete all or as much as possible of the state mandated 42-hour core curriculum including: Communications; Mathematics; Life & Physical Science; Language, Philosophy and Culture; Social and Behavioral Science; and Component Area Option if available. Use your institutions 42-hour core as a guide maximizing courses in the above major core which are included in your institutions state mandated core.
