Dying City

Nov 6, 8, & 9 , 2019

Dying City by Pulitzer Prize nominee Christopher Shinn is directed by senior musical theatre major, Marcella Alba. This remarkable tale of loss and how different people handle their grief leaves a personal, intimate and emotional impact as the characters try to make sense of what is left behind. The playwright is able to humanize and transform the stuff of daily news stories into a devastating statement of the unforeseen and often hidden consequences of war. This subtext takes on extra dimensions when you consider the characters’ professions. Craig, a soldier, Peter, an actor and Kelly, a therapist. Dying City raises obvious, important issues in anything but obvious ways including that ‘closure’ is a mass-delusional figment of the American imagination. Dying City runs November 6, 8, and 9.

At Sam Houston, we’re especially proud to produce a series of student directed shows as part of our main season. The Directors’ Debut Series is a barebones approach to theatre which allows the student to hone their directing skills by telling the story as set down by the playwright through analysis and character creation with actors. Though minimally supported in the area of technical theatre and design, these productions are beautiful, imaginative and powerful. This fall’s Directors’ Debut Series is presented in repertory November 5-9, 2019 in the Showcase Theatre.
