Dr. Guida’s expertise lies in physical geography, GIS, and environmental modeling (including floods and biogeography). His main interests are in assessing how people and communities can become more resilient to large floods as they are becoming more frequent. Dr. Guida’s past research has included flood-risk modeling and collaborative projects in Illinois and abroad in Hungary, as well as modeling climate impacts on vegetation in the Mojave Desert. He has worked on several National Science Foundation-funded projects, including the NSF EPSCoR Policy, Outreach, and Decision Making component at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, that surveyed residents and students about climate change and environmental policy perceptions and support. His current research at SHSU focuses on flooding issues and rivers in southeast Texas, coupling GIS data with hydrologic, hydraulic, and hazard impact models. Work to move flood resilience forward also includes outreach to connect scientific risk to community perceptions and understanding. At SHSU Dr. Guida teaches: Weather and Climate, Sustainability and Environment, Physical Geography, Hydrology and Water Resources, and Geomorphology (Advanced Surface Landforms).
