Preparing Future Leaders for the Gulf Region

The Gulf Scholars Program at Sam Houston State University and Lone Star College provides students with the opportunity to engage in real-world problem-solving, focused on the unique environmental, economic, and social challenges of the Gulf Region. Through coursework, research, and community engagement, the program helps develop future leaders who are ready to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

Funded by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Gulf Research Program, the Gulf Scholars Program connects students from a wide array of academic backgrounds with faculty, industry leaders, and community partners to tackle complex issues such as climate resilience, disaster recovery, and public health.

Students in the program gain valuable experience through interdisciplinary collaboration, applied research, and high-impact learning practices designed to strengthen both their academic and professional skills.

Program Focus Areas:

  • Gulf Region resilience and sustainability
  • Community-based research and service
  • Interdisciplinary leadership development
