AI @ SHSU - Guides & Resources
CREATE Formula for Prompt Engineering
Using the CREATE formula can help you get the results you are looking for faster by providing as much guidance up front to your AI service.
- C - Character: Define the role of the AI (e.g., "You are a university executive with 10 year of experience...)
- R - Request: Be specific with what you need. "Write a compelling email about...")
- E - Examples: Optionally, provide samples for more precise results. Headlines or tone examples can guide the style.
- A - Adjustments: Refine the prompt if it isn't perfect. (e.g., "Avoid numbered lists" or "Make the output concise.")
- T - Type of Output: Describe the desired format. (e.g., "Produce a 250-word justification memo.")
- E - Extras: Incorporate unique instructions.
Puling it all together, here is an example of a prompt using the CREATE formula:
"You are an instructional designer. Create a course outline for a fully online psychology course, including weekly topics and major assessments. Present it as a bulleted list."
