As we all are enjoying summertime outdoors, it is important to be mindful of the sun-safety measures.  Spending time outdoors during summer has its benefits. Sunlight provides vitamin D and spending time outside may help reduce stress. However, spending a longer period of time under the sun without using sunscreen can cause skin cancer. Getting exposed to too much ultraviolet light (UV) is the main cause of skin cancer. According to the CDC, the US receives strongest exposure to UV from 9 am to 3 pm standard time (10 am to 4pm daylight saving time). Try to avoid outdoor activities during this time of the day unless it’s necessary. If you go outside, plan to do the outdoor activities in shaded areas.

Bearkats, you can protect your skin from the sun by following these precautions:

  • Wearing sunglasses can protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes form the harmful UV rays. Best protection can be obtained by using wraparound sunglasses.

  • Sunscreen is a simple but effective way to get protection from UV rays. You should put sunscreen on all exposed skin before going outside. Also, reapply sunscreen as necessary for maximum protection.

  • By wearing darker color cloths instead of lighter color cloths, you can have better protection against harmful sun rays. Long-sleeved dress is also helpful in protecting yourself against UV rays.

  • Darker color woven fabric hats will provide you more protection than lighter color hats with holes. Make sure to use a hat that provides shade to the facial area, the neck area and the ears.

Enjoy the summer safely Bearkats!
