Hello Bearkats,

This year it is the 31st year of observance of the National Recovery Month. Held every year in September, the National Recovery Month celebrates those in substance use recovery and provides an opportunity to educate everyone about available treatment and health services related to substance use disorder and mental health.

According to National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, each year 88,000 adult death occurs in the United States due to alcohol and 31 percent of all traffic fatalities are associated with intoxicated driving. There are numerous adverse physiological and mental health effects of substance use. These adverse impacts of substance use can be avoided through recovery. The observance of the National Recovery Month highlights the possibilities of a happy and healthy life through recovery efforts and successful recovery.

In the spirit of the Recovery Month, we would like to stress that recovery is possible and many successfully recover through their determination. Help is not far away and SHSU is a recovery friendly campus.

In this National Recovery Month, SHSU has been holding several relevant events. These include sessions like “Lunch and Learn – Substance Awareness” and “Ally Training”. The Ally Training is designed to support students who have substance use disorders or are in recovery from them. Through these events we are making help with recovery more accessible.

We are always there in student’s journey through recovery, when one needs support.
