It’s an election year and for many of us, it’s our first time voting in a presidential election. With all the conflicting news reports, social media posts, and political memes, you may feel there is no point in voting, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Your vote matters! As a responsible college student, it’s your duty to exercise the right to vote and stand up for what you believe in. You can shape the nation’s democracy and, more importantly, shape your future. Voting gives you the platform to stand up for the issues you are concerned about such as jobs, healthcare, education, immigration, housing, climate change, and social justice, just to name a few. It may seem like older generations are the ones making all the political decisions, but did you know, there are over 20 million college students in the US? We have a say in how our country operates and who runs it. It’s so important to vote. We are the next leaders of this country and making a difference begins with our vote.

Exercising the right to vote not only makes a difference in our communities, it also makes a difference in our personal health. The act of voting and discussing issues that are important to you strengthens social ties with others. You’ll feel more connected with other people and included in society. Voting can also improve your mental health by giving you the satisfaction of being able to control something in your life. Some people report feeling powerful, included, and important after casting their ballot. Overall, voting boosts your life satisfaction by giving you control of your surroundings and helping you to feel like a productive member of society.
