Trio Student Support Services
We are here to help you make the transition to a college. Which classes should you register for? How do you get a schedule? Who can help you with your homework? TRIO SSS serves 165 first generation students that have a financial and academic need who are seeking Bachelor degrees.
TRIO Student Support Services (also known as SSS) is a federally funded program at Sam Houston State University that can help you find the answers! Like Upward Bound, Talent Search, McNair Scholars, and other federal TRIO programs, TRIO SSS is designed to support your education by providing you with the information and services you need to be successful in college.
McNair Scholars Program

The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program is designed to provide talented low-income/ first generation and ethnic minority undergraduate students with effective preparation for doctoral study. The McNair program at Sam Houston State University encourages graduate studies by providing opportunities for undergraduates to define their goals, engage in research, and develop the skills and faculty mentor relationships that are critical to success at the doctoral level.

Bearkat Learning Community
The Bearkat Learning Community (BLC) is a program designed for incoming freshmen who want to take full advantage of their university experience. In BLC, students take two to three classes together each semester. In the fall, BLC students complete the BLC Challenge, a six session program that encourages students to think deeply about their reasons for attending college, to visualize accomplishments for their four years and to identify resources, attitudes, and opportunities that will help them to have a meaningful college experience. Throughout the school year, they have the to option of participating in additional extracurricular, social, educational, and community service programs.
Bearkat Bundle
Now you can get all your books in one bundle! Our new Bearkat Bundle program is an all-encompassing, affordable way to rent all your textbooks, lab manuals, access codes, and electronic books before the first day of class. The average student is estimated to save $150-200 on textbooks for a semester. All undergraduate students will be automatically enrolled.
Student Advising and Mentoring Center (SAM Center)
The SAM Center provides academic advising services to help you develop and implement an appropriate academic plan. Academic advisors are available to provide guidance, connect you to resources, and help you make a successful transition to SHSU.

The Academic Success Center is a premier student support center with the goal of providing indispensable success resources for every Bearkat. We meet students where they are in the learning process and empower them to achieve academic success.
Newton Gresham Library (NGL)
The NGL is more than the standard image one might imagine. SHSU’s Library has welcoming architecture and large floor-length windows to bring in natural light. With individual study desks and study rooms for two-person and larger group study, the library is the place on campus for quiet, focused study time.
Dean of Students

Helps students with individual or group crisis, facilitates requests for student absence, assists with navigating campus procedures, and serve as an advocate for students, when needed.
Services for Students with Disabilities
Provides accommodations for students with disabilities to reach their full potential through a supportive and inclusive environment.
SHSU Testing Center

Provides an open testing facility to currently enrolled SHSU students as well as those who are not SHSU students. All are encouraged to utilize the center for testing purposes. Categories of tests include:

The Graduate School
At The Graduate School, we believe that building a community of support is important to our graduate students. We encourage the discovery of leadership abilities, building relationships with mentors, creating opportunities for future development, and much more.
The Graduate Computer Lab
Provides resources for research, exam review, presentation or project prep, interviews, and general community.
Thesis/Dissertation Support
Includes numerous resources during the thesis dissertation writing process. The Graduate School oversees and implements the thesis dissertation policies, guidelines, and submission process.
Thesis Boot Camp
Provides support to master’s scholars through the various phases of their thesis or capstone projects. This event is designed for participants to work with experienced faculty and support staff for personalized coaching, intensive writing blocks, intentional goal setting, and individualized writing plans.
Dissertation Boot Camp
Allows doctoral scholars to partner with faculty for coaching, intensive writing sessions, and creating individualized writing plans.
K.A.T.C.H. (Kattributes. Academic Support. Toolkits. Community. Holistic.)
Sessions are accountability and goal-setting meetings where students support each other when studying for an exam, working on a paper, or editing a dissertation.
