Sam Houston State University’s Bearkat Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Center provides free federal and state income tax assistance to most individuals and families with household income of $60,000 or less. Not only can we prepare your return—we can file it electronically with the IRS for free.

VITA is a simple, safe way to file your taxes and keep more of your hard-earned money in your pocket. The IRS’s VITA program has operated for over 50 years and offers free tax help to people who qualify and need assistance preparing their own tax returns. VITA services are not only free, they are also a reliable and trusted source for preparing tax returns. All VITA volunteers who prepare returns must take and pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. In addition to requiring volunteers to be certified, the IRS requires a quality review check of your return before it is filed with the IRS.

The Bearkat VITA Center’s services will be offered through online, virtual appointments during the 2022 filing season.

Our services are offered using online, virtual appointments (via Zoom) on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 PM to 7:00 PM beginning February 8, 2023 through April 12, 2023. For additional information or to schedule an appointment, please contact the Center at vitacenter@shsu.edu.
