Purpose. Reviews university animal care facilities a minimum of two times each year; ensures that the university is in compliance with federal and state law regarding animal care; and recommends policy or procedures pertaining to animal care to the Academic Policy Council. The committee reports to the Vice President for Research and Strategic Partnerships.

Member Appointments. The President makes all appointments. The committee consists of Primary Members (including the attending veterinarian [AV] and a community representative) and Alternate Members.

At least one Primary member and at least one Alternate member will be nominated by the Dean of the College of Science and Engineering Technology. At least one Primary member and at least one Alternate member will be nominated by the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (ethicist preferred). At least one Primary member and at least one Alternate member will be nominated by the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

At least one Primary member and one Alternate member from the community will be nominated by the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs from recommendations made by the committee Chair. The committee Chair may nominate up to three At-Large members who will serve one-year terms.

Primary members and Alternate members serve three-year terms, staggered to ensure continuity of membership on the committee. If vacancies cannot be filled through the previously described process, the Vice President for Research and Strategic Partnerships may be asked to assist in making nominations for these positions.

Attending Veterinarian (AV) Appointment. The President designates the attending veterinarian from nominations made by the Vice President for Research and Strategic Partnerships. The AV serves a three-year term.

Chair Appointment. The President designates the Chair. The Chair serves a three-year term.

Membership Requirements. Members must be qualified through experience and expertise (i.e., completion of CITI certification) to oversee the animal care and use program, facilities, and procedures.
