Beginning Freshmen

Applicants pursuing a bachelor’s degree who have recently graduated or will soon graduate from high school or students who have completed less than 12 transferable college credit hours from another institution.

Transfer Students

Applicants pursuing a bachelor’s degree with more than 12 hours of college-level credit from a community college or other institution.

Graduate Students

Applicants interested in pursuing a master’s degree, doctoral program or other post-baccalaureate certificate. Graduate-level classes are available in on-campus, evening and online programs.

Joint Admissions/ Transient Students

Applicants currently enrolled at an affiliated community college that have future plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree at SHSU or students wanting to attend SHSU for one semester to transfer back to their home institution.

Online Students

Applicants pursuing an online bachelor's degree program or online graduate degree program apply to the university in the same way as students pursuing a degree in a face-to-face program.

International Students

Non-U.S. citizens seeking a bachelor’s or graduate degree program at Sam Houston State University.

Veteran Students

Applicants who are veterans of active duty, currently in the Reserves or National Guard, or dependents of a veteran and are interested in pursuing a degree on-campus or online.

Former/Returning Students

Applicants pursuing a bachelor’s degree who have attended SHSU in the past but have not completed a degree at SHSU or at another institution.

Recognized by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education as a Doctoral Research University, SHSU provides individual attention to its students in every teaching format. Degree programs are available with all on-campus classes, all online classes or a combination of both types of classes.
