Safety Tips

Do you want to prevent crime but feel as though you don’t know where to start? Here are some simple steps you can take right now to prevent crime and increase your safety.

Keep belongings out of sight when you park your car

Remember, property thefts are the number one crime at the university, but many of these crimes can be averted when you eliminate temptation.  Criminals often roam parking lots and streets looking to steal items from vehicles. They utilize the "smash and grab" technique: smashing a window and grabbing the items of value from the car. This process takes no more than a matter of seconds. When possible, take your valuables with you. Laptop computers, purses, briefcases, cell phones and other small electronics are easy and popular targets for thieves. If you must leave valuables in your car, secure them out of sight in a locked compartment or trunk.

Don’t walk home alone

Call the University Police Department at 936-294-1794 and either an officer or one of our foot patrol students will meet you anywhere on campus and escort you to your destination.

Preprogram UPD’s number into your cell phone: 936-294-1794

UPD’s goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff members, and visitors. Never hesitate to report suspicious activity and consider putting this number on speed dial in case of emergencies.

Advise SHSU Police immediately of any suspicious person or circumstance in your residence hall or elsewhere on campus.

Don't leave your unoccupied residence or office unlocked - and don't prop exterior building doors open

Most thefts in college residence halls occur when outer and inner doors are left open. Lock you door even if you will be gone briefly.

Be observant

Make sure that you are aware of your environment. It is advisable that you familiarize yourself with campus buildings and landmarks.

Try to "travel light" around campus

Carry all your belongings in one bag. Numerous backpacks, purses, cases, umbrellas and boxes weigh you down. If you need to run or defend yourself, you will want to be able to react quickly.
