Bearkat alumnus Heath Martin joined the SHSU music faculty in the fall of 2021. While at SHSU, he studied voice with Christopher Michel and graduated with a B.M. in vocal performance. He received his M.M. in vocal performance from the University of Houston where he studied voice with Hector Vasquez and opera performance under the direction of Buck Ross. Since 2015, Mr. Martin has been performing professionally with young artist programs and opera companies throughout the United States.

His most recent appearance in an operatic role was as Baron Pictordu in SHSU Opera Workshop’s own production of Cendrillon in the fall of 2021. He had the privilege of attending the Aspen Summer Music Festival in 2018 as a young artist in the Aspen Opera program where he studied voice with renowned pedagogue Dr. Stephen King and performed under the direction of the late Ed Berkeley. While at Aspen, he covered several roles and performed as a recitalist in the Chamber Music Series in Harris Hall. From 2017-2018, Heath was a young artist with Opera Colorado in Denver, CO. There he performed the roles of Alcindoro in La Bohème, the Commandant in the world premiere, Steal a Pencil for Me, Ford in a matinee production of Falstaff, Belcore in a touring production of L’elisir d’amore, and Alidoro in a touring production of La Cenerentola. He also covered the roles of Marcello (La Bohème) and Jaap Polak (Steal a Pencil for Me). Other professional performance experience includes the role of Ernie in the world premiere of It’s a Wonderful Life with Houston Grand Opera, Baron Douphol in La Traviata with Chautauqua Opera, Stefano in Viva La Mamma and Gasparo in Rita with Lone Star Lyric Opera, and Dr. Gregg in Gallantry with Alamo City Opera.

Mr. Martin has also been a member of the Houston Grand Opera chorus since 2015, performing in many of their opera productions as a chorister and soloist (Eugene Onegin). His collegiate performance experience includes the roles of Dr. Rappaccini in La Hija de Rappaccini, Clayton McAllister in Cold Sassy Tree, Maximillian in Candide, Dapertutto in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, and the title role in Gianni Schicchi. He has also collaborated with the educational outreach branch of Houston Grand Opera, HGOco, as a concert soloist and as a touring performer with Opera to Go!

Heath shares his passion as a performer with that of being a music educator. He began teaching voice in 2012 at Tomball-Memorial High School and later, at Klein Oak High School in 2016. At the Aspen Music Festival, he also served as a teaching artist and taught several voice students in the affiliated music school. He joined the voice faculty at Lone Star College – Montgomery in the spring of 2019 as an adjunct professor and continues to teach voice and music fundamentals there.
