Known as one of the largest and most prestigious criminal justice programs in the country, Sam Houston State University’s Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology is now ranked third in the world among criminology and penology programs by the Center for World University Rankings.
“This is the first time to my knowledge SHSU has a ranked program in the Center for World University Rankings,” said Phillip M. Lyons, Dean of the College of Criminal Justice. “The recognition is an amazing honor and testament to the academic excellence of our already-accomplished faculty scholars.”
CWUR publishes the only global university rankings that measure the education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research. Indicators used to base the rankings include quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty and number of publications and research papers.
As one of the most established criminal justice programs, SHSU’s College of Criminal Justice continues to set national standards in the field in both research and practice. The college offers a wide variety of degree programs and certificates in criminal justice and criminology, forensic science and security studies as well as special programs, organizations and events.
Earlier this year, the college was named Best Online Criminal Justice Program for Graduate Education in the nation, according to the 2017 rankings released by U.S. News & World Report. In 2016, the college was recognized as the most productive in research in criminal justice by the Journal of Criminal Justice Education.
