Regents Approve Charter School At Meeting

BEAUMONT-During the Texas State University System Board of Regents meeting at Lamar University on Feb. 18-19, the following items were approved for Sam Houston State University:

Academic Affairs

SHSU was authorized to implement the following changes to its General Education Core Curriculum course requirements, effective fall 2016:

  • To add DANC 1372 “Dance As Art” to Component Area V: Creative Arts (3 credit hours)
  • To add MCOM 1130 “Media Literacy” to Component Area Option (Language, Philosophy, Cultural) (1 credit hour)
  • To add MCOM 2351 “Film History and Criticism” to Component Area V: Creative Arts (3 credit hours)

The College of Sciences will become the College of Science and Engineering Technology, effective Sept 1, 2016.

The Master of Arts degree in health will become a Master of Science degree in health, effective fall 2016.

The Regents authorized SHSU to establish the Sam Houston State University Charter School, effective August 2016, subject to review and final approval by the appropriate system authorities.

Finance and Audit 

SHSU was authorized an increase in board rates by $40 to each of the mandatory meal plans. Voluntary meal plans increased between $10 and $20, depending on the plan.

Room rates will increase by 4 percent per semester. The amounts range between $76 and $120, depending on the residence hall. 

Contracts

The Regents approved Amendment No. 12 to the May 26, 2005, Food Service Contract between SHSU and ARAMARK Education Services of Texas, Inc., which provides for a board rate increase of an average of approximately 2 percent.

SHSU was authorized to purchase the property located at 815 15th Street in Huntsville for $200,000.
