Program
Throughout human history, artists have found ways to express beauty, emotion, and vision using many media. As technological advances were made, some artist continued to use traditional methods of expression but others expanded the dimensions of artistic expression using new methods of creativity. The Department of Art offers opportunities for creative students to explore and develop proficiencies in many traditional art forms, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics and photography. Students also may develop skills in graphic design and computer animation using state-of-the-arts technology.
The Department of Art offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts with programs in Graphic Design, Studio Art, Photography, and Computer Animation and the Bachelor of Art with a program in Studio Art. The Department has extensive studio space, modern facilities, and two galleries to support the academic programs. In addition to a computer graphics laboratory for student use, the Art Department has two studios dedicated exclusively for Computer Animation students. Graduates with a degree in art will find employment in many industry or business settings or may have rewarding careers as self-employed artist.
Classes in the Department of Art are organized in two ways, depending on the subject matter of the course. Lecture classes meet for three clock hours per week for one semester. Combination lecture and studio classes meet for six clock hours per week. Art students should plan to budget their time for at least three clock hours per week of involvement for each semester hour credit.
Art majors are encouraged to participate in student exhibitions and other exhibits, programs, and lectures sponsored by the Department. Students must supply the necessary materials for their art projects in all studio classes.
Art 161 and Art 271 may each be utilized as
3 hours of transfer credit to meet degree requirements.

Students must complete the Art courses indicated for the first two years with a minimum 3.0 grade point average in Art to remain candidates for the BFA degree. Students whose Art grade point average falls below 3.0 will become candidates for the BA degree.

Students may complete a 48-hour major in Studio Art, in which case the 18-hour minor requirement does not apply. ART 271(1312). 366(2333NA), and 371(2346NA) are required if the 48-hour major is chosen.
**Students are advised to use the elective/minor hours to meet the 42-advanced hour requirement for graduation.
The Core Curriculum at Sam Houston State University contains 42 semester credit hours, encompassing six component areas. Each component area has a minimum credit hour requirement and a set of specific courses that may be used to satisfy the requirement. Many departments require specific courses from core component areas to meet degree requirements. Selecting departmentally specifed core courses to complete university core requirements reduces the total number of hours required to graduate.

Degrees require a minimum of 120 hours with 42 advanced hours (300 and 400 level courses). Some degrees require additional hours. All students are required to complete at least six writing enhanced courses accumulating a minimum, of 18 semester hours towards degree completion. Six of the hours must come from the student’s major field of study. SHSU students MUST complete ENG 164, ENG 165, Core Composite Area 2, and one-half of Composite Area 3 prior to enrollment in any upper-level class. In general, the Bachelor of Arts degree requires 8 hours of lab science and the Bachelor of Science degree requires 16 hours of lab science. Applicants for the Bachelor of Arts degree should consult their major department web page for foreign language requirements. Many colleges and programs have additional prerequisites for upper-level classes.
Prior to enrolling in core classes, students are encouraged to review specific degree requirements for their major. Selection of major specified core courses may reduce the total number of hours required for graduation.
Students are encouraged to select the university catalog offering them the most advantages with respect to degree completion. The respective university and/or college catalog selected for graduation determines final degree requirements.
