What is TRIES?
The Texas Research Institute for Environmental Studies (TRIES) is a research facility dedicated to the pursuit and dissemination of scientific discovery through innovative research, and to the growth of unique educational opportunities for both faculty and students at Sam Houston State University. The Institute hosts and supports leading researchers in environmental science and provides expertise and an awareness of current environmental issues to serve both the public and scientific communities.
The History of TRIES
The history of TRIES began in 1991 with congressional funding directed by Charles Nesbitt Wilson (Democratic U.S. Representative from the Texas Second Congressional District) to the state universities of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin. At that time TRIES was named a Regional Institute and was created to meet the growing need for environmental education and awareness. Today TRIES is an internationally recognized Research Institute and holds true to its original mission in providing research expertise and the resources needed for addressing current environmental issues and helping to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
