Announcing- New Language and Culture courses in the

Woodlands offered by Sam Houston State University

Starting in March, the Sam Houston State University English Language Institute will be offering Language and Culture classes at the SHSU Woodlands Center, which is located next to the Lone Star College-Montgomery campus in the Woodlands.  These classes are designed for non-native speakers who wish to improve their speaking, reading, writing and oral presentation skills in fun, special topics courses.  The four courses offered will include Career Exploration, U.S. and Texas Culture, Understanding the U.S. Education System, and a Current Events Course.   Classes are 8-weeks long and will be held from 8:15 to 1:15 Monday through Thursday.  International students can enroll full-time or the classes can be taken individually.

As of 7/18/2016, the Office of International Programs will now be charging $75 for the processing of any OPT application (including the STEM extension application).  The fee can be paid here.  Please contact Justin Ball at jball@SHSU for the authorization code or if you have any questions.  For more information on OPT click here.     


Academic HealthPlans, beginning January 1, 2017 will also administer the student health insurance waivers. All international students (any student who is in the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa) is required to have health insurance. Enrolled international students will have the insurance premium automatically charged to their student accounts. Coverage for Spring 2017 through Summer 2017 will begin January 1, 2017 and end August 14, 2017. You may apply for a waiver starting December 29, 2016 through January 30, 2017 if you already have coverage under an alternate health insurance plan that meets certain criteria requirements.  Please click here for more information.

We are the international gateway at Sam Houston State University. There are six areas of service under the office but we also work with colleges and departments to promote and highlight all international efforts and initiatives across campus. Our purpose is to facilitate, encourage and initiate the process of internationalizing SHSU. The areas of service directly under the office include:
