Center for Art Research and Education
The Center for Art Research and Education (CARE) strives to enhance the visual culture of SHSU, Huntsville, Walker County and the surrounding communities. CARE promotes awareness and appreciation of art and design by supporting faculty research, art education, visiting artists, design projects, and opportunities for faculty and student engagement with community.
Art Against the Odds
A community-based arts project in partnership with the Hospitality House. It was developed for the families and children of prisoners to provide a non-verbal means of expression through the production of visual art and respite from the stress of their lives through the process of making. Edie Wells, program director, holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts and teaches in the Department of Art.
Art Educators Summer Studio Intensive
The Summer Studio is a week-long program for K-12 art educators. The retreat style workshop aims to re-energize educators in their own creative practice while introducing ideas, materials, and inspiration to take back to their classrooms
The Idea Factory is a Graphic Design agency that provides design services for organizations and businesses in the local and university community. The Idea Factory provides internships for Graphic Design students who work under the direction of a faculty mentor. The Idea Factory generates revenue from clients and provides low cost or pro bono services for non-profit organizations.
SHSU Student Satellite Gallery located in downtown Huntsville, adjacent to the square is an accessible venue that provides opportunities for student engagement and interaction with the local community. Satellite Gallery exhibits by current SHSU art students and alumni throughout the fall and spring semesters.
SHSU Collection of Texas Art
The Collection of Texas Art includes works from the University Art Collection by artists who have lived in Texas with a focus on works that have a connection to the region surrounding Huntsville and Walker County. The Collection of Texas Art is a resource for Art Historical research and tells the story of the community, documents the history, and expresses the spirit of the region. Social Practice Artist-in-Residence
The Artist-in-Residence program invites artists working in social practice to visit Huntsville and create collaborative/participatory projects that engage the local community. CARE will invite applications and provide housing for one to two artists per year. Proposals can be for projects that last up to three years. Artists-in-Residence may be offered interim teaching assignments in the Department of Art and/or give lectures and conduct workshops in the MFA Art and Social Practice program.
