SFC Matthew Moates

SFC Matthew MoatesSergeant First Class Matthew Moates hails from Toledo, Ohio and enlisted in the Army in 2003 as a 19D Armored Reconnaissance Specialist.  He is a graduate of the Basic Airborne Course, Air Assault School, Advanced Airborne Course (Jumpmaster), the Modern Army Combatives Course (level 1), the Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, the Basic Instructor Course, the Small Group Instructor Training Course, the Battle Staff NCO Course, the Foundation Instructor Facilitator Course, and all levels of NCOES through the Senior Leaders Course (SLC).

SFC Moates has served in all key leadership assignments in the Cavalry Scout Career Development Model from Team Leader through Platoon Sergeant.  His Assignments include Tracked Vehicle Driver and Team Leader for Operations Group (Dragon Team), Fort Irwin, CA; Team Leader, Section Leader, Operations NCO, and Platoon Sergeant for 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment (3 Fury), 4th Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC; Senior Small Group Leader, 18th Airborne Corps NCO Academy, Fort Bragg, NC; Section Leader, Scout Platoon, HHC, 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment (Manchu), 1st Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea; Platoon Sergeant, 1st Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment (Geronimo OPFOR), Fort Polk Louisiana.  SFC Moates currently serves as Military Science Instructor and Training NCO at Sam Houston State University ROTC, Huntsville, TX.

SFC Moates earned his BS in Political Science and Public Administration from Troy University graduating Summa Cum Laude.  He is currently working towards completing his MS in Project Management through the College of Business Administration at Sam Houston State University.

His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with “V” device (combat valor) and 4 OLC, the Army Achievement Medal with 4 OLC, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 2 Campaign Stars, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the NCO Professional Development Ribbon with Arabic Numeral 3, the Overseas Service Ribbon with Arabic Numeral 3, the National Defense Service Medal,  the Meritorious Unit Citation, the Combat Action Badge, the Senior Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, multiple foreign parachutists badges, and the Armor Branch Order of Saint George Medallion (Bronze).

He has been married to his wife Lyndsay Moates (formerly Thompson) since 2011.  They have two children, Lucas (16) and Jacqueline (13).
