NIRSA Marketing Institute Recap
Submitted by: Megan Hale, SHSU Recreational Sports Marketing and Promotions Graduate Assistant
Orlando, Florida - November 5-9, 2014
The NIRSA Marketing Institute was held on November 5-9, 2014 in Orlando, Florida. The conference provided an opportunity to network and learn from some of the most influential leaders in the field of collegiate marketing. According to Megan Hale, SHSU Recreational Sports Marketing and Promotions graduate assistant, she was able to attend 12 individual marketing sessions throughout the duration of the institute. These sessions addressed topics such as: branding, social media marketing, working with student graphic designers, and sponsorship and development. Megan indicated that one of her favorite sessions examined how Oregon State Recreational Sports department collaborates with departments on campus in order to synchronize marketing efforts across campus. Once a month, various departments meet to collaborate and discuss marketing ideas and department-related issues. She also suggested that she would love to start something similar on the SHSU campus.
The Disney’s Director of Business Development gave her the ESPN World Wide Sports tour. She learned that although they have a much larger marketing budget than most campus recreation programs, they still utilize the same marketing tools (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) They also discussed the importance of content marketing, which is utilized through the SHSU Rec Sports marketing efforts. Overall, there were approximately 100 conference attendees. The smaller crowds allowed for opportunities to network with other marketing leaders and learn from marketing leaders across the country.
