Dropping Classes
Dropping classes involves removing one or more classes from your schedule, but remaining enrolled in at least one class for the semester. If you would like to drop your entire schedule, please view our resignation information.
Q-Drop:
Dropping a course after its census date results in a Q-drop. If you Q-drop a course, you will not receive a refund. You will also receive a grade of Q on your transcripts for the dropped course. Q grades do not affect your GPA; however, undergraduates are limited to six Q-drops during their academic career. For more information on this, please see “Limitation of Q-Drops” below.
Dropping Without a Q:
If you drop a course before or on its census date, you will receive a 100% refund for the course. The course will also not appear on your transcript.
You will be allowed to Q-drop no more than six classes during your undergraduate academic career. Classes dropped before their census date will not be included in the calculation of the accumulated six Q-drop count. If you have met your limit of six Q-drops, you will need to petition the SHSU Registrar for permission to Q-drop any additional classes. If the Registrar denies your request, you will be required to remain in the class for the remainder of the term.
This took effect with the start of the Fall 2007 semester. Any drops accumulated before Fall 2007 are not included in this calculation. Section 51.907 of the Texas Education code was enacted by the State of Texas in Spring 2007 and applies to students who enroll in a public institution of higher education as first-time freshmen in Fall 2007 or later and limits the number of courses a student is permitted to drop. Any course that a student drops is counted toward the limit if "(1) the student was able to drop the course without receiving a grade or incurring an academic penalty; (2) the student's transcript indicates or will indicate that the student was enrolled in the course; and (3) the student is not dropping the course in order to withdraw from the institution." Some exemptions for good cause could allow a student to drop a course without having it counted toward this limit, but it is the responsibility of the student to establish that good cause.
Please view this guide on how to drop a class for assistance.
Dropping your last or only class for the semester is a resignation. If you are looking to drop your only class for a term, you must resign.
