A certificate is defined as a “non-degree award for completing an educational program of study after high school”.
A certification is a credential that verifies someone’s knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform a specific job. They are typically awarded after a candidate completes an assessment of some kind.
A degree is an academic credential awarded upon the completion of a specific area of study. Universities offer baccalaureate degrees at the undergraduate level and master’s and doctoral degrees at the graduate level.

Your certificate will be mailed to your permanent legal address on file.
Non-degree-seeking students will apply for their certificate through ApplyTexas.
Degree-seeking students will schedule a meeting with their academic advisor.
Yes, all students receiving degrees or certificates may participate in Commencement .
There is a $25.00 fee to apply and receive your certificate that will be placed on your student account. You can make payment through the Cashier's Office.
It may be possible to finish your certificate and degree at the same time, although some programs have different requirements. Students are recommended to reach out to their academic advisor for more information about the requirements of their program.
Students apply for their certificate in the term they plan on completing their certificate requirements.
Yes, you will need to apply for each certificate to be added to your degree plan.
Digital Credentials
Along with your printed certificate, SHSU also provides a digital version of your credentials. These are sent and housed within Parchment. Click the link below to access yours.
