Trainer: Tom Wibert

Tom Wibert is the Chief of the New Braunfels Police Department.  He was sworn in on November 8, 2010.  He is the retired Chief of the East Lansing Police Department where he served for 25 years, the last 5 years as Chief of Police.

He has earned two Master’s Degrees, one from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, and one from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.   Tom is a 3rd generation police officer.  He is also a graduate of the Northwestern University Traffic Institute Class #125. His Father served with the East Lansing Police Department from 1948 to 1980.  His grandfather served with the Lansing Police Department from 1918 to 1943.   

Tom has been involved in community service for most of his adult life.    He chaired four fundraisers which raised 1.4 million dollars for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, andwon their National Volunteer Team of the Year Award.   He was awarded the Governor John Swainson Award for Historic Preservation from the State of Michigan.   Tom has served as a board member for 9 different non-profit agencies and has been the President of four.   Tom is the President of the New Braunfels Kiwanis Club.  He is on the Board of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Comal County and the Board of the Sexual Assault Response Team Foundation, and he was the 2011 winner of the Comal County Communities in Schools “Great Legs Contest.”  

Tom has a wife (Willie) and three kids,  a daughter (Emily) in 12th grade, a son (Peter) in 10th grade and a son (Ben) in 7th grade.  

Tom has had three paying jobs in his life.  He has worked for the New Braunfels Police, the East Lansing Police, and his first job was a 7 year stint with McDonald’s.  The money was terrible but the food was excellent.
