Keynote Address

Mr. Ernest Cline, author of Ready Player One.

Ernest Cline is planning to drive his tricked-out DeLorean to Sam Houston State University! Cline will speak about Ready Player One, the tale of a penniless teenager’s journey through cyberspace to find hidden treasures and save the world from an evil corporation. Ready Player One was a New York Times bestseller, and Warner Bros. bought the rights to a film adaptation before it was even published. Now Cline has finished writing Armada, another novel about another teenager with the power to save the world from an alien invasion. Universal Pictures has already bought the film rights.

Playing Games, Making Games, Learning Through Games

Today more than ever before, students’ interests begin with technology and its use. Computer games stand as one of the most attractive technologies. The focus of this presentation is to find the best and the most exciting ways for students to become engaged in research and exploration during the process of designing and developing computer games for instruction. Participants discuss the idea of developing computer games for education and learn to create a game.

Close Your Eyes, Touch Your Nose: A Vaccine for Cultural Viruses

The viruses that infect our computers pale compared to the viruses borne by our symbol systems.  Language carries colossal cultural baggage in the form of mindsets that are as insidious as the worst of the malware sneaking onto our hard-drives.  Through a presentation of photos, Dr. Dan Phillips will explore how these mindsets impact the building industry, as well as our food, clothing, resource consumption, and belief systems.

Expanding Your Virtual Vision. Let’s Welcome the Fab Five!

In this virtual age, there are infinite ways to receive and share information. But there is much to be said about good old fashioned human interaction. No matter who you are dealing with, body language and other signals can often provide a wealth of information that you simply can’t find on line. This session will focus on the evolution of communication and how to make the most of it.
