Osteopathic Principles and Practices
Hands-On Healing, Whole Person Focus
The Department of Osteopathic Principles and Practices (OPP) at SHSU-COM anchors the education of student doctors in the philosophy, art, and science of osteopathic medicine. With a focus on the interrelationship between structure and function, our faculty guide students in developing hands-on diagnostic and treatment skills that enhance clinical care across all specialties.
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is taught across all four years of the curriculum, ensuring longitudinal skill development.
Through patient-centered instruction and real-world experience, students learn to treat the whole person. Our department ensures that the distinctiveness of osteopathy remains at the core of every SHSU-COM graduate’s approach to medicine.
Facilities
SHSU-COM’s OMM Lab is designed specifically for hands-on learning. This state-of-the-art facility provides student doctors with an optimal environment to develop and refine their palpatory and manipulative skills.
Equipped with high-quality treatment tables, audio-visual technology for real-time demonstration, and ample space for one-on-one instruction, the OMM Lab supports interactive learning in both small groups and large cohorts. Whether students are learning foundational techniques or practicing advanced manipulations, the lab plays a vital role in preparing them to confidently apply OMT in clinical settings.
