SHSU-COM Annual Awards
At Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, we are proud to recognize the exceptional achievements and contributions of our students, faculty, and staff through a variety of awards presented annually. These awards honor leadership, service, research, teaching, and collaboration across our community, celebrating those who exemplify our mission and values. From recognizing student leaders who go above and beyond to acknowledging the dedication of our faculty, preceptors, and staff, each award is a testament to the commitment and excellence found within the SHSU-COM community.

GUIDELINES
- Self-nominations are not accepted.
- Any individual or organization that wins an award will not be eligible to win the same award the following year.
- Award recipients must be in good academic standing with the university.
OMS-I, II, III Awards
Presented to a first-year that has made outstanding contributions to the COM, SHSU, and the community.
Presented to a second-year that has made outstanding contributions to the COM, SHSU, and the community.
Presented to a third-year that has made outstanding contributions to the COM, SHSU, and the community.
Presented to a student committed to excelling academically and contributing positively to campus through engaging involvement while balancing various roles as a non-traditional student.
Presented to an OMS-I, II, or III for outstanding scholarly activity and research contributions in areas including but not limited to: medical education, clinical care, public health, and/or biomedical sciences.
Presented to an OMS-I, II, or III for making outstanding contributions to the school, the community, and the practice of medicine.
Awarded to students for exceptional performance during clerkship rotations, as nominated by preceptors, in one of the following categories:
- General Surgery
- Pediatrics
- OB-GYN
- Adult Medicine I & II
- Psychiatry
- Family Medicine
- Emergency Medicine
- Rural
- Longitudinal OMM
- Other
Awarded to students for excellence in service, as nominated by the respective departments:
- Excellence in Service: Clinical Skills
- Excellence in Service: Clinical Anatomy
- Excellence in Service: Molecular & Cellular Biology
- Excellence in Service: Osteopathic Principles & Practices
- Excellence in Service: Physiology & Pharmacology
- Excellence in Service: Primary Care & Clinical Medicine
Graduating Student Awards
Awarded to a graduating medical student who has contributed to the education and advancement of their fellow students and exemplifies a commitment to and leadership in teaching and advancing medical education. This student has made lasting changes to the curriculum or learning environment.
Awarded to a graduating medical student for clinical excellence, including patient communication skills, reasoning ability, teamwork, and medical knowledge.
Awarded to a graduating student chosen by their peers based on academic achievement, dedication to the profession, high ethical standards, commitment to the best interests of their patients and who manifest honesty, unselfishness, personal self-discipline and responsibility, good judgment, kindness and good interpersonal relations.
Student Council takes nominations and is responsible for the selection process.
Awarded to a graduating medical student who has outstanding scholarly activity and research contributions in areas including but not limited to: medical education, clinical care, public health, and/or biomedical sciences.
Awarded to a graduate who has demonstrated outstanding character, excellence in academics, broad engagement, and consistent leadership throughout medical school.
Awarded to a fourth-year student who has made outstanding leadership contributions at the local, regional, and national level.
The Dana G. Hoyt "A Measure of a Life is its Service" award is awarded to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the school, community, and practice of medicine.
Faculty & Staff Awards
Awarded to a student organization advisor who has gone above and beyond their responsibilities for the sake of the organization and its student members.
Awarded to a faculty or staff member who has outstanding scholarly activity and research contributions in areas including but not limited to: medical education, clinical care, public health, and/or biomedical sciences.
Awarded to a staff member to recognize their outstanding work and invaluable contributions in support of our students, faculty, and programs in service to advancing the mission of the COM.
Awarded to a faculty or staff member for making outstanding contributions to the school, the community, and the practice of medicine.
Awarded to individual faculty members for teaching that has had a profound effect on students due to an outstanding commitment to engaged teaching, education scholarship and leadership, collegiality with fellow faculty, as well as student success.
Group Awards
Highlights entities of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Sam Houston State University that do not fall within the parameters of the current student leaders and organization categories. These groups may be COM or SHSU funded entities, university departments, or other on-campus initiatives that contribute back to COM in the areas of spirit, tradition, and service.
Highlights a student organization that carries out the mission of their student organization and the mission of the COM and positively contributes to campus life.
Highlights a program, event, or initiative that benefited the campus and/or community and was the result of a strong collaboration. This can be a single or ongoing program, event, or initiative.
