Student Outcomes

See how SHSU-COM student doctors perform on board exams and with residency placements, and what these say about our mission in action.

At Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM), student outcomes reflect our commitment to academic excellence, clinical readiness, and service to medically underserved communities.

SHSU-COM received full accreditation status from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) in April 2024, earning the distinction of Accreditation with Exceptional Outcomes – the highest accreditation possible, and valid for 10 years. Student Outcomes by Cohort

As required by COCA Standards, the following table lists the COMLEX-USA (aka, “the boards”) first time pass rates and residency match rates by graduation cohort.
SHSU-COM Cohort - Graduation Year COMLEX-USA Pass Rate (Level 1) COMLEX-USA Pass Rate (Level 2) COMLEX-USA Pass Rate (Level 3 ‡) Match Results (Main and Military) Match Results (Match Day) Match Results (Total Placement) Match Results (In Texas) Match Results (In Primary Care †) Placement Locations

2025 99.0% 92.0% 100% 95% 99% 99% 55% 56% Report
2026 100% - - 96% 99% 99% 66% 51% Report

Note: While Level 1 and Level 2 pass rates are tied to student progression, Level 3 pass rates are reported by the NBOME based on the calendar year in which the exam is taken. Because students take Level 3 during residency at varying times post-graduation, Level 3 results listed above are aligned to the most closely associated graduation cohort for reporting purposes.

* First-time scores.
† FM, IM, Ob/Gyn, and Pediatrics.
‡ Level 3 results are reported by calendar year and may include graduates from multiple cohorts. As a result, Level 3 data is aligned with the most appropriate cohort for tracking and may not reflect a single graduating class.
