Learning Communities & Student Organizations
Learning Communities
All entering first-year students at SHSU-COM are placed into one of four Learning Communities, which serve as flexible, student-centered homes for academic and social support. Each community is guided by faculty and staff sponsors who serve as mentors, advisors, and career development coaches. These communities foster meaningful relationships between students and faculty while offering opportunities for peer mentoring, community service, and team building.
Programming is student driven and may include topics like lifelong learning, wellness, medical professionalism, ethics, and work-life balance. Learning Communities help students feel connected and supported throughout their medical education journey.
What Learning Communities Mean at SHSU-COM

Student Organizations
Student organizations bring life to the SHSU-COM campus. With over 50 active groups, students can connect with others who share their passions, whether they are interested in a medical specialty, cultural identity, wellness, or advocacy.
These organizations give students the chance to lead, serve, and grow beyond the classroom. Each one is student-led and supported by the Division of Student Affairs. Together, they create a vibrant, supportive environment for learning and leadership.
