Director's Welcome

Our mission is to cultivate compassionate physician leaders committed to advancing healthcare across Texas communities through the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based medicine. We are deeply dedicated to preparing the next generation of physicians to serve in rural and underserved areas throughout the state. We emphasize professionalism, integrity, and a strong work ethic—qualities that foster long-term success—while also encouraging balance and self-care, recognizing that a sustainable career in medicine requires thoughtful attention to both personal and professional well-being.

We are proud to be an unopposed program at the only hospital in Walker County, providing a unique training environment where residents gain extensive procedural experience and benefit from close, one-on-one mentorship with specialists. Most rotations take place on or near our hospital campus, though we also offer rotation opportunities at major hospitals in the greater Houston area, near the SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Training in a setting like ours offers broad clinical exposure and enhances your readiness for diverse practice opportunities after graduation.

We’re excited about the possibility of working with you in the future and hope you’ll consider becoming part of our growing family medicine community.

Have a Healthy Day,
Ouida Collins, MD, MPH
Interim Program Director
