Clinical Rotations at SHSU-COM

Learn where SHSU-COM student doctors complete their hands-on medical training during their third- and fourth-year rotations in our community-based model.

Learning Where It Matters Most

At SHSU-COM, your clinical years are rooted in community-based, hands-on learning. From urban hospitals to rural health centers, you’ll gain experience in real-world settings that reflect the diverse healthcare needs of Texas. Our distributed clinical education model ensures that you receive high-quality training through rotations in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, surgery, psychiatry, and more.

Students work closely with physician mentors at affiliated clinics and hospitals across the state, developing clinical skills and building professional confidence in a supportive environment. Whether you’re seeing patients in Conroe, Corpus Christi, or the Piney Woods, you’ll be part of a statewide network of compassionate, skilled and service-oriented care.

A Distributed Clinical Education Model

SHSU-COM follows a distributive model of clinical education. This means student doctors complete third- and fourth-year rotations in various healthcare facilities across Texas, rather than a single teaching hospital. This approach prepares students to practice in a wide variety of environments and supports SHSU-COM’s mission to increase access to care in medically underserved areas.

Core rotations include:

  • Family Medicine
  • Adult/Inpatient Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • OB/GYN
  • Psychiatry
  • General Surgery
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Rural and Underserved Medicine

Students also participate in electives, and longitudinal primary care experiences that align with their career interests.
