Hazlewood Act

State Benefits and Texas Veterans Commission.

Veterans that entered the service with residence or place of entry as “Texas”, the lone star state thanks you for your service with the Hazlewood Act. This Act provides Veterans with 150 credit hours to utilize in higher education.

  • Hazlewood Exemption Application 
  • TX residency 
  • Certificate of eligibility showing no federal educational benefits available 
  • Meet SHSU’s Financial Aid GPA requirements 

Hazlewood-Legacy 

Veteran shares 150 hours benefit with dependent (spouse, biological child, stepchild, adopted child, and tax dependent) 

  • DD214 
  • Must be younger than 25 
  • TX residency for both student and Veteran 
  • Hazlewood Exemption Application 
  • Certificate of eligibility showing no federal educational benefits available 
  • Proof of relationship (birth certificate, marriage license, adoption documents, tax transcripts) 
  • Meet SHSU’s Financial Aid GPA requirements 
  • Selective Service for male dependents 

Hazlewood - Non-Legacy (Disability) 

150 hours for all dependents of a veteran who is totally and permanently disabled or meets the eligibility requirements for individual unemployability according to the disability ratings of the Department of Veterans Affairs Missing in action (MIA), or Killed in action (KIA).

  • 100% Permanent and Total-VA disability rating 
  • Hazlewood Exemption Application 
  • Certificate of eligibility showing no GI Bill® educational benefits available 
  • Proof of relationship (birth certificate, marriage license, adoption documents, tax transcripts) 
  • Student must be Texas Resident, the veteran does not need to be Texas resident, 
  • No defaulted Texas guaranteed loans, 
  • Meet SHSU’s Financial Aid GPA requirements 
  • Selective Service for male dependents 

Please note, Hazlewood does not pay for housing, meals, or book stipends. Additionally, this waiver may not fully cover your tuition and fees. 

Attention Active Duty and Guard/Reserve Veterans 

If you wish to use Tuition Assistance, you must speak with your Educational Services Officer (ESO) or counselor at your base first to begin that process. If you are a prospective student, you must receive approval from your ESO, military counselor or Service prior to enrollment to use Tuition Assistance.
