Giving Back, Moving Forward

Alumni support makes it possible for future Bearkats to achieve their goals. The Alumni Association awards multiple scholarships annually to deserving students who show academic excellence, leadership, and school spirit.

Scholarships & Endowments

  • Alumni Legacy

    A recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, have completed a minimum of 15 credit hours at Sam Houston State University, be majoring in any discipline, and maintain an overall GPA of 2.00.

    Must be a descendant of a member in good standing of the Sam Houston State University Alumni Association.

  • Coy and Ruth Perkins Scholarship

    Created in memory and in honor of Coy and Ruth Perkins, parents of Nancy Perkins Wilson, for their contribution and service to education at Sam Houston.

    A recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior majoring in any discipline, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 overall, and have a family member who is an alumnus of SHSU.

  • Dr. Marie Hayden Scholarship

    Established by Marie Hayden, a retired library science faculty member at Sam Houston State University.

    A recipient must be a full time junior or senior, majoring in any discipline, maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, and demonstrate financial need.

  • Eva Futch Westmoreland Scholarship

    Established by Mr. and Mrs. George P. Futch, Jr. in loving memory of Mrs. Stace (Eva Futch) Westmoreland, a former professor in the demonstration school at Sam Houston.

    A recipient must be majoring in any discipline and maintain satisfactory academic standing.

  • Lee Andrew Franke Scholarship

    A memorial endowment for men and women attending Sam Houston State University as Elementary Education majors that was established in loving memory of the donors’ grandfather and father, Lee Andrew Franke.

    A recipient must be majoring in Elementary Education, meet the normal entrance requirements for enrollment at SHSU, and maintain satisfactory academic standing.

  • Winnie Laurene Ragsdale Scholarship

    Established by John R. Ragsdale in honor of his mother, Winnie Laurene Ragsdale, who served as the City Librarian in the Humble branch of Harris County.

    A recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student, be majoring in any discipline, be a graduate of Humble High School, and have a min 3.0 overall GPA.

  • Donna K Carnahan Endowed Scholarship

    A recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student, have and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, declare a major in Business Administration, be a member of the student alumni association, and demonstrate a commitment to service with the university and/or the community.

  • SHSU License Plate Program Scholarship

    To be considered as a recipient of the SHSU License Plate Program Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the following criteria: demonstrate financial need, be a Texas resident, be enrolled on at least a half-time basis at SHSU, and maintain a satisfactory academic progress in program of study.

  • Tuition Raffle

    To be considered as a recipient of the Alumni Association Tuition Raffle, applicants must satisfy the following criteria: must be a first generation college student, must be a Texas resident,must be a citizen of the United States, demonstrate financial need, must have a GPA of 3.0 or better; or in the case of an incoming freshman, and graduated within the top 25% of his/her class.
