Ready to Begin?

Complete the Admissions application on ApplyTexas or CommonApp and pay the $90 application fee.

If English is not your first language and you are transferring under 30 hours from a U.S. college or university, you must provide English proficiency scores. All scores must be less than two years old. 

  • TOEFL score of at least 69 (iBT or iBT Special Home Edition).
  • IELTS score of at least 6.0.
  • Duolingo EPT score of at least 100.
  • ACT verbal score of at least 27.
  • SAT verbal score of at least 600.
  • IB curriculum English SL score of at least 4.
  • English-O Level grade of at least C in the Cambridge Curriculum
  • CXC, CCSLC, CSEC, or CAPE English exam score of at least 4.

Submit your official academic transcript(s) in a sealed envelope to the address below or electronically. Transcripts will be evaluated by a certified SHSU official. You may also choose to send an official evaluation of your high school transcript from a NACES accredited evaluation company.

Please provide certified English translations for documents submitted in a language other than English.

SHSU strongly encourages international students currently outside the U.S. to apply at least 90 days before the beginning of the semester for which they are applying. Some graduate programs may have earlier deadlines.

Special Admissions Requirements

International Freshmen Who Attended High School Inside The U.S.

  • You must have a minimum GPA of 2.5

International Transfers with at least 30 Transferrable Hours

  • 12-17 hours must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on transferable hours
  • 18+ hours must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher on transferable hours
  • Students who are currently suspended, dismissed, or expelled from another college or university are not eligible for admission to SHSU.

International Transfers with Under 30 Transferrable Hours

  • If you have 12-17 hours, you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on transferable hours
  • If you have 18 or more hours, you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher on transferable hours
  • If you have under 12 transferable hours from a college or university of recognized standing, you must meet the standards of beginning freshmen and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on transferable hours.
  • Students who are currently suspended, dismissed, or expelled from another college or university are not eligible for admission to SHSU.

International Graduate Students

  • SHSU offers the option of an in-house review of credentials completed outside of the U.S..
  • If SHSU is unable to review your credentials, then you must provide a transcript evaluation of your baccalaureate degree if it is conferred outside of the U.S.
  • NACES accredited evaluators include SDR in Houston and WES. Additional NACES evaluators can be found at naces.org/members.

Inspiring Success

Once you’re admitted, it’s time to enroll. Here is what you need to know to have an easy enrollment experience.

You must provide your own or your sponsor’s bank statement(s) on bank letterhead indicating an amount on deposit equal to the estimated expense for one year at SHSU. Visit the Global Engagement Center for more details.

If you are an international transfer student and have dependents who will come with you to the U.S., you must provide each dependent’s full name, date of birth, country of citizenship, and their relationship to you. For each dependent, the dollar amount of financial support must be increased by $4000 per dependent. Visit the Global Engagement Center for more details.

Regardless of current residency, you must provide a home country address for your I-20 A/B form to be processed.

You must provide copies of documents such as your passport photo page and additional documents if you are transferring from a U.S. institution.

Upon arrival to campus, you must check in at the GEC.

You are required to purchase the University’s Group Hospitalization, Medical Evacuation, and Repatriation Insurance, which is available to all eligible SHSU students. More information on this required coverage can be accessed through the University Health Center by calling 936.294.4737.
