Scholarships
We understand that college is expensive, and we’re here to help make a way for high-achieving students to pursue their goals. There are no fees associated with participating in Honors.
- Honors 23 at $40,000 Awarded to incoming freshmen each academic year. Must have a 1320 SAT or 29 ACT. Disbursed over four years or a maximum of eight semesters.
- Bowers 2 at $80,000 Awarded to incoming freshmen each academic year. Must have a 1350 SAT or 30 ACT. Disbursed over four years or a maximum of eight semesters.
- Transfer 15 at $5,000 One time award. Student must have a 3.25 GPA and robust resume

How to apply
Your Honors College application serves as your application for the Honors, Bowers, or Transfer scholarships. Candidates are evaluated on leadership qualities, community volunteerism, academic and personal achievements, and their plans to engage in the college.
Each year, all applicants eligible for the Honors Scholarship are invited to interview via Zoom. Students eligible for the Bowers Scholarship may be invited to a second round of interviews.
To be considered for a scholarship, your Honors application must be submitted by the scholarship priority deadline, March 1.
Transfer students who begin in a spring semester must have their application submitted by November 1 to be considered.
Award Details
- The Honors Scholarship is awarded semesterly at $5,000 over four years, totaling $40,000.
- The Bowers Scholarship is awarded semesterly at $10,000 over four years, totaling $80,000.
- The transfer scholarship is a one-time award of $2,500 per semester for the first full academic year, totaling $5,000.


Recipient Responsibilities
Once the Honors and Bowers scholarships have been awarded, students must remain in good standing with Honors to continue receiving the scholarship by completing the following:
- Maintain Status 1 by making satisfactory academic progress toward graduation with “Honors” or “Highest Honors”
- Follow a track of excellence in research, community engagement, leadership, or global scholarship
- Bowers Scholars are required to follow the research track and complete a thesis, graduating with “Highest Honors”
- Remain enrolled full-time (12 credit hours) each semester at SHSU
- Maintain a 3.25 SHSU GPA
- Be advised by the Scholar Advisor each semester
- Attend 2 qualifying events per semester
- Live in Honors housing for their first academic year
- Enroll in the Honors Scholar section of UNIV 1101
Other funding requests
We are committed to supporting our students in their academic and professional endeavors. We can assist with some additional funding for the following:
- Conference travel and registration
- Study abroad and field study travel expenses
- Research supplies
- Certification exams
