Seven Assassins Walk into a Bar | Faculty Success
SHSU lecturer and theatre professional Dain Geist recently premiered his original play, "Seven Assassins Walk Into a Bar," at Main Street Theatre in Houston. The dark comedy follows six assassins gathering in a bar to honor a fallen colleague, offering audiences both wit and reflection on morality and camaraderie.
The play’s lighting design was created by SHSU professor Eric Marsh, who has designed more than 29 productions for Main Street Theatre over the past two decades. Although the two had collaborated before as actor and designer, this was their first time working together as director and designer.
Geist began writing "Seven Assassins" during the early months of the pandemic in 2020, completing its ninth and final draft in 2024 after multiple workshops and staged readings. His connection to Main Street Theatre played a pivotal role in the show’s debut, as Artistic Director Becky Udden invited Geist to include the play in the theatre’s 49th season after learning about his work.
The production also featured SHSU alumni, including musical theatre graduate Saroa-Dwayne Sasa, and several former students who contributed to the show’s lighting and sound.
Reflecting on the experience, Geist said his greatest measure of success came from the collaboration and creativity shared by the cast and crew. "They brought my words to life in a way that far surpassed my expectations," he said. Encouraged by the success of "Seven Assassins," Geist plans to continue writing while pursuing his acting career.
