Services

  • Provide guidance on CITI training courses
  • Provide training on the Cayuse electronic system for IRB, IACUC, and IBC
  • Facilitate the review/approval of UAS/drone requests regardless of funding
  • Provide guidance on Export Controls requirements related to grant funding
  • Coordinate all compliance reviews of research
  • Work with PIs to complete Responsible Conduct in Research requirements related to federal grant funding
  • Work with PIs to facilitate their understanding of Biosafety requirements as set forth by the National Institutes of Health

CITI Training

The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) provides research compliance training required for all investigators, faculty, staff, and students engaged in research involving human participants, animals, biosafety materials, or other regulated activities.

Before beginning a research project or submitting a protocol in Cayuse, all required CITI training must be completed.

Instructions

First-time users:

  1. Go to the CITI Program website.

  2. Click “Register”.

  3. Under “Select Your Organization Affiliation”, type and select Sam Houston State University.

  4. Use your SHSU email address to create your account.

  5. Complete your personal information and password setup.

  6. When prompted, select the appropriate Learner Group (see below).

Select the training course that matches your research area or requirements.

Learner Group Recommended For Example Courses
Social, Behavioral, and Educational (SBE) Researchers working with human subjects in social sciences, education, psychology, and related fields. Human Subjects Research (SBE)
COCJ Researchers in the College of Criminal Justice completing human subjects research training. Human Subjects Research (COCJ)
Biomedical (BIOMED) Researchers working with clinical or laboratory-based human subjects or biological materials. Human Subjects Research (Biomedical)
Laboratory Animal Welfare Individuals conducting animal research or instructional use. Working WIth IACUC
Biosafety (IBC) - Group 1 Course Researchers working with biological materials, recombinant DNA, or hazardous agents. Biosafety / Biosecurity Training
Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Required for federal grant projects and NIH/NSF trainees. RCR Core Course
  • Each course includes multiple modules, with most requiring a final quiz.

  • A score of 80% or higher is required to earn completion ONLY for IRB and IBC courses.

  • Training completions are linked to each researcher's Cayuse profile.
  • If you don't see a training completion in your Cayuse profile, ensure your email address matches in both Cayuse and CITI.
  • CITI training for most courses is valid for four years, while others are valid for five years.
  • When your certification expires, log in to your CITI account to update your training.

How to Add or Change Institutional Affiliation

  • Log in to your CITI account CITI account.

  • Click your name in the upper right corner → ProfilesAdd Institution.

  • Search for and select Sam Houston State University.

  • Remove any old affiliations that are no longer relevant.

 

How to Transfer Completed Courses

If you completed CITI training at another institution:

  1. Log in, add Sam Houston State University as a new affiliation (while maintaining your old affiliation for a short period of time), and select the courses you want to transfer to SHSU.

  2. Confirm transfer and verify that courses now appear under your SHSU profile.
