Intellectual Property & Commercialization
The Technology and Commercialization Unit aims to support the development and commercialization of intellectual property. We assist investigators that have intellectual property resulting from university-supported research with the patenting and licensing of their novel discoveries/inventions. Our goal is to protect your intellectual property, and to facilitate the transfer of research discoveries into businesses and products.
Disclose an Invention
Faculty and staff are required to disclose inventions, discoveries, or other forms of intellectual property that may qualify for patent protection as soon as possible (APS230229).
Patentable intellectual property includes, but may not be limited, to novel devices, discoveries, methods, processes, research tools, and software.
It is particularly important that disclosures are summited before any presentation of the intellectual property in a public forum including conferences and poster sessions and before the intellectual property is published in any form including as an abstract or journal article or online.
Any public disclosure prior to establishing protection of the intellectual property can impact the legal status of your future patent. Please contact the Technology and Commercialization Unit in ORSP if you have questions regarding potential patenting of your intellectual property.
