Overview

Each fall and spring semester, beginning fall 2026, this program will provide students at each of the TSUS four-year institutions the unique opportunity to serve as legislative interns at the U.S. Capitol. Interns will engage with and develop a greater understanding of the policy making and legislative processes as well as gain invaluable professional skills, practical government work experience, and a more robust professional network. A maximum of 10 students per semester will be selected system-wide for this opportunity.

Students from all majors are eligible for consideration.  Applicants will be required to submit a brief statement, resume (using this template), residency status, and two letters of recommendation.  Applicants must be in good standing with the university and meet the requirements below.

  • Undergraduate Students – have completed a minimum of 60 institutional semester credit hours with a minimum cumulative 3.0 institutional GPA.
  • Graduate Students – have completed a minimum of 15 institutional semester credit hours with a minimum cumulative 3.25 institutional GPA.

Students will receive scholarships of up to $10,000 to defray living, travel, and school costs, contingent on financial aid guidelines and students' housing costs.

Following the close of the application period (March 1), university officials will review all completed applications and may request interviews or additional paperwork from selected candidates. Competitive candidates should expect to be interviewed (one-on-one or in panel format) while also being asked to perform group exercises, simulated tasks, or other activities that facilitate the selection process. In April, SHSU will submit (up to) the top five applications to the Texas State University System, which will make the final selection from among all the System's Four-Year Institutions. Selected students will be notified of their selection in May and the Texas State University System will begin placement over the summer for the fall internship.
