SHSU Expands Bearkat Promise to Include Texas Families Earning Up to $100,000
Sam Houston State University is expanding its Bearkat Promise program, raising the family income eligibility threshold from $40,000 to $100,000 for Fall 2026. The change broadens access to guaranteed tuition support and opens the door for more Texas students, particularly those from middle-income families, to pursue a college degree with greater financial certainty.
Through the Bearkat Promise, eligible incoming freshmen and transfer students receive funding to fully cover mandatory tuition and fees for up to 15 credit hours per semester. By increasing the income threshold, SHSU is addressing a growing affordability gap affecting families who may not qualify for traditional need-based aid but still face challenges covering college costs.
“College affordability affects far more families than many realize,” said Jason L. Meriwether, vice president for enrollment management. “Expanding the Bearkat Promise ensures more Texas students can focus on earning their degree rather than worrying about tuition.”
To qualify for the Bearkat Promise, students must:
- Be an entering freshman or transfer student at SHSU.
- Be a Texas resident with demonstrated financial need.
- Be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant.
- Submit the FAFSA by the priority date of March 1.
- Enroll in at least 12 credit hours per semester.
The Bearkat Promise is renewable for up to three consecutive years for students who maintain satisfactory academic progress and continuous full-time enrollment. Initial qualifications must be met as well as Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and hours. While the program covers mandatory tuition and fees, it does not include housing, meal plans or other non-mandatory expenses.
